All Pipelines Do Not Spill

MYTH: All pipelines spill—the Keystone XL pipeline is no different.

TRUTH: Safety is built into the full lifecycle of a pipeline starting with design, construction, operation and retirement.

Every day, more than 2.5 million miles of pipeline in the U.S. move oil and other energy products safely where they are needed. The U.S. Department of Transportation has stated that pipelines are the safest method of transporting energy products.

Thanks to the fracking revolution, the U.S. is no longer the energy-dependent nation it was for most of the past 50 years. Oil production since 2007 has increased more than 80% to 9.5 million barrels per day. The U.S. still imports a lot of oil, but the share of petroleum from foreign sources, 27%, is at its lowest level since 1985, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
